Taking the GRE or Graduate Record Examination is usually an annual thing. That means that you can never take the test early in your career, although some people can take it as a substitute for what they have missed out on, namely college credits. It is therefore important to know when you are eligible to take the test.

This information, however, does not come readily available to the student. Usually, an instructor at your university will provide you with this information. This way, you can see what is coming and prepare accordingly.

So for students who are looking at specific majors, they can opt out of taking the Graduate Record Examination, or they can take the test themselves.

There are also some who consider this special test as an exam to determine if the person is up to the challenge of college, and thus, it is usually given only to those who are already qualified. Even so, there are some people who prefer to take the GRE as a self-study course.
